Archie Comics released Sonic Boom, an eleven-issue comic book series. Sonic Boom is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series of the same name. The comic first debuted in October 2014 and ended in September 2015.
Development
Based on Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the comic book series takes place in the Sonic Boom World at the time of Worlds Unite in the Sonic Boom universe. It was first hinted at in the Sonic Super Special Magazine #12 solicitation, but it was confirmed on July 16, 2014, when Archie Comics announced Sonic Boom subscriptions.
Unlike other Sonic comics at the time, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe, which were more superhero action-drama, the Sonic Boom comic series, like the TV show, focused completely on humor, action, and adventure with loads of puns, fourth-wall-breaking commentary, and physical comedy. The series is designed to be a casual, fun read than an ongoing action-adventure drama like the other Sonic games, with several limited, approachable chapters and a few overarching plot arcs.
Ian Flynn wrote the series, and Evan Stanley illustrated it. Later, Paul Kaminski, Archie Comics’ Executive Director of Editorial, revealed that the comics would be co-written with Ian Flynn by Bill Freiberger, Sam Sandak Freiberger, Greg Hahn, and Alan Denton. They were writers on the Sonic Boom TV series to better integrate the comics into the world of video games and television over the comics’ final year.
The comic series began on October 24, 2014, and ended on September 2, 2015, with the twelfth issue, while “its tales and characters will continue in [Archie Comics’] other volumes.” The storylines will continue in the Sonic Super Digest and Sonic Super Special Magazine series, as indicated in the said issue. Ian Flynn noted the series’ cancellation was not due to low sales, as it was “doing OK” or a Sega decision. Rather, Archie Comics felt that Sonic Boom would be better suited to select spots than a monthly magazine.
Arcs and stories
“The Big Boom,” which serves as a prequel to the series, follows Team Sonic as they go about their regular lives while being attacked by Dr. Eggman’s new Big Boy mech. After fending off the first onslaught, the crew must recover Tails’ house, which Eggman’s rock-cyborg has seized. Knuckles then hooks up with Eggman for the latter’s second strike in an attempt to outsmart Eggman in a bid to display his brains. Even though Knuckles’ plot does not work as planned, he and the others defeat the Big Boy once more, but Amy’s Hammer is lost in the process. Eggman tries to launch a rebuilt Big Boy as Team Sonic searches for it and tends to a heartbroken Amy, only for Orbot and Cubot to accidentally destroy it after discovering Amy’s Hammer, which finds its way back to Amy. Soon after, Team Sonic is attacked by far more powerful Big Boy, who has the heroes on the ropes until Sticks defeats it with the Rock of Justice. Following that, Eggman returns to his lair with a new plan.
